characteristics
Light gray twigs and smooth bark. Toothed leaves are green and heart shaped at the base. Both male (catkins) and female flowers are on each plant. Female flowers are more noticeable with a gray-brown bud and protruding bright red stigmas. The fruit is round smooth nut hidden within hairy husks.

Forest edges, clearings and roadsides.
uses
Nuts are edible by humans. Cover and food source (nuts) for grouse, squirrel and deer.
Often removed by commercial timber growers because of it's aggressive colonial habit.
